The Spirit of Whistler

Updated: Jul 31, 2020

So I have just come back from attending my mandatory “Whistler Customer Service Spirit Session” in the village.  This is for all to attend that are living and working in Whistler for the season, as you receive a heavily discounted pass in return.  Now, I was under no pretences that this would be the most fun afternoon of my life – after all – who likes ‘mandatory attendance workshops’ the description itself implies sheer boredom.

However, I was pleasantly surprised to find it wasn’t half bad at all, with useful videos about the mountain and it’s history, safety and advice from pro’s.  And the customer service stuff wasn’t so bad either.  I have already realised that not only in Whistler, but across all of Canada’s Province’s they place an enormous amount of emphasis on great customer service (no matter the industry). It’s a good thing really, think about the last time you interacted with a Canadian person – I bet they were super polite. It’s inbred in them from a very young age and I think it’s lovely.

I mean really whats wrong with being served and talking to lovely people all the time? It’s awesome. They should just be paid a lot more for it that’s all, but that’s getting into another whole blog topic…

So here I was sitting in the session listening to this gorgeous little old man give us his spiel, and couldn’t help overhearing these 3 rude Australian boys behind me constantly talking and making snide comments throughout the entire session. Talk about a culture difference. Now don’t get me wrong, not all Aussie boys are so brash, but god lately it seems to me the ones in Whistler for this season sure are! You know the type. The kind that will shout out echo’s in the Sistine Chapel in Rome and not stand up for old ladies on the bus. Yes them. Too cool for school.

Well I think it’s unfortunate for them because girls will find it exciting at first, the chase for the cool boys and all that jazz.  But let me assure you that further down the track, all women will ultimately choose to be with the considerate, politely listening men in the “Whistler Spirit Session” - And not the naughty boys in the back.

So do us all a favour: Shut up and listen for once.  It’s not always about you. That’s the Spirit.
